To broaden students' horizons in the humanities and enhance their international cultural literacy, our university held a special lecture titled "The Magical Literature of Spain: Exploring the Spanish-Speaking World through Don Quixote, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and The Alchemist" on May 20, 2025.
Supported by the Higher Education Sprout Project, the event attracted numerous students with a keen interest in literature and intercultural experiences.
The lecture focused on three iconic literary works from the Spanish-speaking world: Don Quixote by the Spanish literary pioneer Miguel de Cervantes, One Hundred Years of Solitude by the Colombian master of magical realism Gabriel García Márquez, and The Alchemist, a philosophical fable known for its allegorical style.
The speaker guided students through the intricate narrative structures that blur the lines between reality and fantasy in these works, while also analyzing the deep cultural, historical, and philosophical insights embedded within.
Throughout the session, students not only gained a greater appreciation for the unique charm of Spanish-language literature but were also prompted to reflect on profound themes such as personal ideals, family destiny, and the choices that shape one’s fate. The event sparked active discussion and lively engagement.
Some students shared that this lecture allowed them, for the first time, to reconnect with the cultural contexts of Spain and Latin America through the lens of "world literature," and it significantly deepened their interest in Spanish language studies and cross-cultural issues.
This event not only successfully enhanced students’ reading and critical thinking skills but also fulfilled the Higher Education Sprout Project's core objective of "strengthening humanistic literacy and multicultural understanding," bringing more reflective and creative energy to the campus.
